So with my own manuscript completed, I am able to get caught up on the voluminous volumes of history I have accumulated that have had to sit and wait for the completion of the narrative in Rising Sun, Falling Skies. One of these books is The Lost Empire of Atlantis: History's Greatest Mystery Revealed, by Gavin Menzies.
No big surprise that the book is about Minoan Crete, which many believe to be the basis for the legendary continent of Atlantis. The Minoans, who were primarily seafarers and traders, disappeared at the height of their power. Precisely why and how is not known, but most theorize it had something to do with the massive volcanic eruption at Santorini (or Thera, or Thira) some 80 miles to the north, an eruption that dwarfed even the famous Krakatoa eruption. The Santrorini eruption in about 1600 BC would have sent a titanic tsunami crashing into the north coast of Crete and reaching well inland, which would have wiped out almost all of the Minoan ports and population centers. As you can see, most of the elements of the Atlantean legend are present.
I am still reading the book, so I can't give it a full review just yet, but, uh, am I the only one who sees an issue with the cover?
"Discovered America"?
